Biofilm Phase-2 Advanced & Super Bio-Vegetarian

Biofilm Phase-2 Advanced™

The gut microbiome is a complex and integral part of health in general. For the gut to function optimally, there needs to be a good balance of beneficial bacteria. When the gut microbiome is out of balance whether from improper diet, antibiotic use, or inflammation then pathogenic microbes are able to take hold in the gut and cause a host of problematic symptoms.

As these unfavorable microbes thrive they build protective barriers, also called biofilms, around themselves. These biofilms evolve from weaker forms (Phase 1) to stronger forms (Phase 2) making it harder to infiltrate. There are natural dietary herbs and nutrients that are good anti-biofilm agents as well as antimicrobials to support a healthy gut microbiome balance. Biofilm Phase-2 Advanced supplement is designed specifically as an advanced biofilm disruptor.

Alpha Lipoic Acid – has antioxidant activity and also promotes the regeneration of other important antioxidants including glutathione, vitamin C, and vitamin E. It also helps to disrupt biofilms.

Black Cumin – has been shown to have strong broad spectrum antimicrobial activity against multiple strains of bacteria, fungi, virus, and parasites. It has also been shown to play a role in the inhibition of bacterial biofilm formation.

Bismuth Subnitrate – a good binder and biofilm disruptor that also has potent broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity.

Super Bio-Vegetarian

Having a healthy immune response is imperative to staying well and bouncing back quickly after sickness. Giving the body an extra boost of immune supportive nutrients is a nice way to be proactive and prepared for the typical “cold-and-flu” season as we head into Fall.

One of my favorite combinations of immune supportive supplements is Super Bio-Vegetarian. A potent nutritional supplement that combines a selection of vitamins, minerals, and herbal constituents, as well as Shiitake and Maitake mushrooms that enhance the body’s own immune mechanisms to maintain a healthy immune response.

Barberry – contains a constituent called Berberine which is an antimicrobial and can help decrease inflammation and modulate the immune system.

Bitter Orange – contains bioflavonoids that have been shown to decrease inflammation as well as have antimicrobial and antioxidant properties.

Cayenne Pepper – is considered a stimulant that increases circulation and has been shown to increase body temperature and help clear infections.

Echinacea angustifolia – also known as coneflower, is often used for support when there are infections.

Echinacea purpurea – is best used as a prevention against upper respiratory tract infections.

Garlic – is a plant with effective antiviral, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. It is often used for infections of the respiratory tract such as recurrent colds and influenza.

Ginger –  is a medicinal plant that has many benefits including antioxidant and antimicrobial activity.

Goldenseal – is useful for infections and inflammation. It is particularly restorative to the mucus membranes and can help clear out excessive mucus or phlegm.

Grapefruit – part of the Citrus genus, has been used all over the world for its health benefits including antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity.

Magnesium – an important mineral nutrient involved in a wide array of functions. It has been shown to improve sleep and support calmness during times of stress.

Maitake – both an edible and medicinal mushroom that has been shown to modulate the immune system and act as an antioxidant, antiviral, and antibacterial.

Myrrh – is a gum resin that is primarily used for respiratory infections and to help clear out mucus. It also has anti-inflammatory activity.

Oregon Grape – has antimicrobial properties that can help with clearing bacterial, viral, and fungal infections.

Shiitake – an edible and medicinal mushroom used to support health conditions such as depressed immune system, infections, bronchial inflammation, frequent colds, and the flu.

Vitamin A (100% as beta carotene) – beta carotene is converted in the body to vitamin A which is important for immune function and as an antioxidant.

Vitamin B6 – performs a wide variety of functions in the body including immune function. One way it does this is by promoting the production of lymphocytes and interleukin-2.

Vitamin C – plays a role in immune function. It has antiviral and antibacterial effects and also functions as an antioxidant.

Zinc – a cofactor in many biochemical pathways, it functions as an antioxidant, is anti-inflammatory, and has antiviral properties. It is a great additional support when there is immune deficiency.

Natural Anxiety Support – Guest Blog by Dr. BreAnna Guan

Natural Support for Anxiety

Anxiety can be crippling and cause great discomfort. Thankfully there are countless natural products and lifestyle strategies that support calm and relaxation. This article will cover my favorite go-to items and lifestyle hacks for soothing anxiousness as well as my favorite products. This is not medical advice but rather a list of my favorites. Please talk with your provider before starting any new lifestyle or supplements.

LIFESTYLE

Sleep – just consider a tired toddler, and it is so clear how much we need sleep to maintain balance. Having a regular sleep schedule may be just as important as the number of hours of sleep. Give this gift to yourself and support your immunity as well.

Spend time outdoors
– nature and green spaces increase parasympathetic activity (rest and digest). Nature has a way of slowing us down and getting us outside of ourselves and gives us a greater connection and sense of oneness with creation and humanity. Can you make this a regular habit during times of stress?

Balance blood sugar
– nothing causes anxiety like skipping meals and high sugar processed foods! If you’re consuming these foods, gradually back off them and include healthy fats and proteins with abundant greens to keep you feeling relaxed and calm.

Green leaves
– (lettuce, arugula, and etc.) are alkaline and reduce inflammation take down the burden of inflammation and acidity in our bodies. Less physical stress leads to less mental stress. Aim to have a large serving with at least two meals per day.

Breath
– take deep breaths or belly breathing to help focus, calm, and collect when thoughts, feelings or emotions lead, to overwhelm. Set aside time at the top of each hour or in between tasks to simply pause and breathe. Simple yet effective

Hormone balance –
if your a menstruating female and your hormones are out of balance due to estrogen dominance, PCOS, peri-menopause/menopause or luteal phase defects you’re less likely to have the calming protection of health progesterone levels. Talk with your doctor about supporting progesterone and get your levels checked.

Sweat
– amazing exercise will be a game-changer and support focus and increase feelings of strength and confidence. Startup gradually and do something you enjoy preferably outside! Get that tension out and move!

SUPPLEMENTS

Theanine– an extract from green tea, the amino acid increase a sensation of calm and relaxation. Best taken away from meals. Effective and gentle calm support

GABA –
a neurochemical made by our own nervous system to support calm. This is a little strong and more direct-acting than theanine. I like the liposomal extracts.

Kinder Calm
– by Priority One – a chewable formula designed to support the body’s natural response to environmental stresses, great for sleep support.

Magnesium – threonate format crosses the blood-brain barrier and supports calm and sleep. Other forms are not strong. This could cause drowsiness. Citrate and Glycinate are other forms that I recommend for daily supplementation.

Skullcap
– This beautiful herb helps with focus and reducing the thoughts that just won’t stop. Also helpful for sleep.

Chamomile and lavender
tea- are wonderful for children and gentle enough to use regularly. You can even make these into popsicles or ice-cubes for the little ones.

Ashwagandha
– an herb that supports the endocrine system, especially adrenals and thyroid. Used for children and elderly this nourishing herb is a wonderful go-to keep you strong through periods of high stress.

Guest Blog: Our Lymphatic System

Our Lymphatic System

Our Lymphatic SystemDr. Melina Roberts

The lymphatic system is our secondary circulatory system.  It plays an important role in supporting our immune system and treating inflammation in the body.  The lymphatic system circulates throughout the entire body.  The lymphatic system is made up of lymphatic fluid, lymphatic vessels, lymphatic nodes, the spleen, the thymus, tonsils and Peyer’s patches in the gut.  The lymphatic system drains and cleans up all the tissues in our body.

Lymph nodes are biological filtering units and are distributed throughout the body.  Lymph nodes produce white blood cells called lymphocytes that defend the body against microorganisms and other harmful pathogens or toxins in the lymphatic fluid before it returns to the blood stream.

The obvious sign that the lymphatic system is congested or not flowing effectively is edema or swelling, but there is often more subtle signs such as lowered immune function, chronic infection, chronic inflammation and reduced detoxification capacity.  Reduced immune reactivity is another sign of lymphatic congestion.  The immune system can become less reactive to microorganisms or toxins if the body is in acidosis, therefore when a person says that they never get sick, it is not necessarily a good sign.

Promoting lymphatic drainage is significant in addressing inflammation. The lymphatic system removes and filters inflammatory mediators.

The lymphatic system can become congested from food intolerances, immune challenges, heavy metals, environmental toxins, surgery, scars or structural imbalances.

Food intolerances can lead to the ineffective breakdown of foods where certain proteins get caught in the lymphatic fluid.  Immune challenges such as viruses, bacteria, fungi or parasites whereby the lymphatic system is working to removing and eliminate these pathogens from circulation can lead to congestion of the lymphatic system.  Heavy metals and environmental toxins will congest the lymphatic system as they overload the detoxification pathways and this leads to chronic inflammation. Scars or surgery or structural imbalances can lead to physical barriers in effective drainage of the lymphatic system.

When trying to improve lymphatic circulation, it important to also understand flow pathways of this closed internal system.  We have a superficial lymphatic system that drains our head, neck, skin and breast tissue.  Then we have a deep lymphatic system that drains all of our deep vital organs.  The superficial lymphatic system drains into the deep lymphatic system, the fluid then filters through the liver and empties out the colon.

Most typical lymphatic massages only focus on the superficial lymphatic system and without properly stimulating the deep lymphatic system, there cannot be proper drainage of the superficial lymphatic system into the deep lymphatic system.  Also if the liver is congested or the colon is not moving effectively, then can back up the system and cause congestion of the lymphatic system.

In order to support proper lymphatic drainage, the deep lymphatic system needs to be stimulated, the liver to be supported and the bowels need to be moving effectively.

Create an Unstoppable Morning Routine

A great morning routine is a sure way to win the day, as it sets the productive tone for the rest of your activities. Taking the “I’ll figure it out” or “I’ll get it done when I feel motivated” attitude will set you up for failure. Follow a daily routine and you will be amazed by how calm, organized and refreshed you are.

Drink 20 oz. of water

The importance of staying hydrated is greatly underestimated. Upon wakening, you haven’t had any water in 8-9 hours.  Drinking a lot of water in the morning will give you lasting energy throughout the day, as opposed to caffeine that has an inevitable crash. Added bonuses: Water fires up your metabolism, hydrates you, helps your body flush out toxins, gives your brain fuel, and can assist in weight loss.

Meditation/deep breathing

Taking a few minutes to quietly meditate and breathe in the morning is key. When you give time to yourself to be calm and centered, you will be amazed at how much more you can give to others.  Some people even choose to wake up at the crack of dawn to create this time for themselves. This gives them a calm and serene period before the hectic day arrives or the kids wake up. The best part: meditation or a few minutes to yourself breathing deeply is an incredibly productive use of your time. Studies have shown that meditation increases focus, memory, productivity and creativity – just to name a few. Everybody wins!

Do something you love

It is very important to include something you enjoy in your morning routine. It will allow you to have something to look forward to each morning and subsequently help you to stick to this routine. If you go to a 5 am spin class or run a few miles that is great, but make sure it is something you want to be doing. You shouldn’t be dreading getting out of bed.  Make sure your routine is fit to you and what makes you happy, not what you think you should be doing. Some examples of what you could do: watch cute puppy videos, look up a inspirational video on YouTube, open up your favorite book, look at a photo album, etc.

Get creative with this one, this time is for you and can be used however you like!

Write a journal entry

This journal could be on paperwork or on an app like OneNote, Evernote, or just Microsoft Word. Include prompts such as something you learned yesterday/this week, 5 things you’re grateful for, 5 things you appreciate yourself for and what to focus on for the day.

Look at your calendar to plan out the day

Before you get into the thick of it, it is important to plan so that you can win the day. By doing this in a quiet, centered space, you will be much more likely to get everything done that you want to that day instead of rushing trying to remember everything you have to do. Having everything written down and planned out will give you a peace of mind that it will all get done.

Kevin Kruse, the author of 15 Secrets Successful People Know About Time Management begins his morning with five minutes of stretches, while doing the following:

  • Mentally recitation of his personal mission statement
  • Listing three items of gratitude
  • Reminder of his three big goal areas (Health, Wealth, and Love)

The key here is to plan out what specific things you can do that to get closer to your larger goals. All you have to do is be a little bit better than yesterday. Planning out specific small steps to a larger long term goal is key, it makes the journey less daunting and more feasible.

You don’t need a lengthy meditation routine or a wide resource of expensive equipment, books, etc. Everything can be done with what you already have. Don’t get hung up on the details, this is an outcome oriented approach. You mainly need to get clear on your goals and intentions, then everything seems to work out much easier. You just need something that helps you set your mind on what you want to focus on for the day, and set your heart and mind in the right attitude.

Go out there and have an amazing day!

Guest Blog: SIBO – “Gut Health, Real Estate, and Too Much of a Good Thing”

Gut Health, Real Estate, and Too Much of a Good Thing

Dr. Autumn W. Farr, M.S., N.D.

Our body has a natural symbiotic relationship with our environment.  We eat food and absorb nutrients, we drink water and hydrate our cells, and we interact with people and develop relationships.  A change in any of these determinants of health can shift our body into a physical, chemical, or emotional imbalance.

We also have a unique relationship with the microscopic bacteria that naturally inhabit our intestinal tract.  An imbalance in this bacteria can also cause us to experience a shift in mental-emotional-physical health.  One example of bacterial imbalance includes Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO).  This overgrowth of bacteria in the small intestine crowds out the healthy gut flora and interferes with natural digestive processes such as nutrient absorption, waste elimination, and energy metabolism.  As a result, SIBO can lead to nutrient deficiencies, toxin overload, low energy, and a variety of physical, mental, and emotional symptoms.  Bacteria can be beneficial to healthy digestion, but only under the parameters of the right type, the right amount, and the right location.

SYMPTOMS

SIBO symptoms can present in a variety of ways.  The overpopulation of intestinal bacteria can cause digestive complaints such as abdominal pain, gas, bloating, nausea, constipation, or diarrhea.  The shift in energy metabolism and the depletion of nutrients can contribute to headaches, fatigue, depression, anxiety, and a generalized thought that you don’t quite feel like “yourself.”  Weight changes, skin breakouts, and musculoskeletal pain are also part of the SIBO symptom profile.  Due to the broad range of symptoms, other diagnoses are often pursued before arriving at the correct diagnosis of SIBO.

DIAGNOSIS

The bacteria in the digestive tract produce hydrogen gas and methane gas.  Breath tests are used to measure and analyze the gases that are produced by the bacteria.  These breath tests can be used to diagnose SIBO as well as to guide treatment plans and to monitor outcomes.  Stool tests can show the profile of organisms in the digestive tract, allowing for targeted treatment of the specific bacteria that contribute to the imbalance.

TREATMENT

Treatment of SIBO often involves a strict nutrition plan and appropriate supplementation as well as promotion of healthy bowel elimination patterns and prevention of SIBO recurrence.  The beauty of naturopathic medicine is the commitment to discovering the cause of an imbalance in health.  The cause of SIBO may be an underlying imbalance in gut chemistry, nutrition, lifestyle patterns, and environmental factors.  Structuring an appropriate treatment plan with therapeutic nutrition, supplementation, and elimination patterns may help to relieve symptoms.  Determination of the original cause of SIBO overgrowth in each individual will be vital to preventing recurrence.

BALANCE

The intestinal lining of our gut is valuable real estate.  Ideally, we want to fill that space with organisms that are beneficial for our body as a whole.  Imbalance or overcrowding can compromise the structure, the function, and the integrity of that area.  This is an excellent reminder for us to be mindful of our own personal “real estate” of body, mind, and spirit.  True health begins when we make a conscious decision to fill our time, our space, and our mind with meaningful relationships, healthy nutrition, and mindful lifestyle practices.

PREVENTION of SIBO:

  • Work with professional medical providers to optimize your nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle choices.
  • Restore your digestive tract so that you can feel happy, healthy, and balanced.
  • Make space in your life for healthy choices, a healthy lifestyle, and healthy relationships.

Biofilms role in today’s health.

What is a BioFilm?

Biofilms are little communities of organisms in your body that join forces to avoid elimination. The protective coating they form is officially called a polymer matrix, which is like a “force field” or barrier that keeps drugs like antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals or any other antimicrobial from being effective in removing them. They are a huge concern in the medical community at the moment, however, many patients and physicians don’t even know about them.

Biofilms are capable of adapting to many environments and thus can be found in all parts of the body. These areas include teeth, sinuses, tonsils, eustachian tubes of the middle ear and the intestines. Biofilms in the intestines can lead to chronic digestive and allergic responses often seen in difficult cases.

Immune Imbalance

The immune system is responsible for attacking, controlling and eliminating biofilms. In healthy individuals, this happens regularly, however, in susceptible individuals, biofilms can take hold and begin to wreak havoc on the whole body, specifically the immune system.

T-Cells

By launching an attack on the biofilms via immune cells (macrophages, natural killer cells, cytotoxic T cells and T lymphocytes) the body also creates a significant amount of inflammation. What happens then is the immune system shifts to what we call a TH2 dominant state with the TH1 cells in a lowered state. By shifting to TH2 dominance, the body is then unable to launch a full TH1 attack and eliminate the biofilm. It is most likely constantly battling the biofilm, but simply doesn’t have enough strength to eliminate it.

A TH2 dominant state is very common in many conditions. The TH2 dominant state is what we find in many people with traditional allergies. If you have an overactive TH2 dominant system, you will tend to have food allergies and sensitivities or airborne allergies and an increase in histamine release. This may even be confused with histamine intolerance. Some things that may push someone towards TH2 dominance include genetic predisposition, toxic substances and heavy metal exposure.

Biofilms and the Gut

One of the reasons you may have biofilms in the first place is due to early exposure to antibiotics. There are actually good biofilms that can be destroyed by antibiotics. These good biofilms and healthy gut flora provide a natural type of defense to foreign invaders.   Without the good biofilms as a defense mechanism, bad biofilms can proliferate and destroy the gut lining and increase permeability, a term commonly coined as “leaky gut”. With leaky gut, the intestinal barrier is compromised and allows substances to move into the bloodstream. By allowing different substances into the bloodstream, inflammation begins and things such as food allergies and sensitivities eventually alter the health of the immune system. The leaky gut will lead us to a TH2 dominant state as I mentioned above. Leaky gut also can slow down digestion, decrease toxin clearance and initiate proinflammatory chemicals.

Clinical Research

Research in gut health and immune system responses to permeable gut linings are revealing significantly new understandings into how these natural defenses work. This new research also helps us learn how to support the body’s ability to maintain a balanced and healthy gut flora.

Dr. Paul S. Anderson is on the leading forefront of biofilm research and education.

We are excited to announce that we have received exclusive access to Dr. Paul Anderson’s webinar on BioFilms, worth $59.00 – and are offering it to you for FREE!
