Proteolytic enzymes, also called protease, are enzymes that break down proteins. First into smaller fragments called peptides and eventually down to their components, amino acids. There are different types of proteolytic enzymes classified according to the sites that they catalyse the cleavage of proteins. The best known proteolytic enzymes are found in the digestive tract. Additionally, proteolytic enzymes also work to break down plasma proteins which enhance their flow into the lymphatic system, promoting a speedy resolution to pain and swelling from injuries.
