Presenting our special for the month of June: 20% off Priority Zyme – our proteolytic enzyme formula supporting a healthy inflammatory response!
Proteolytic enzymes, also called protease, are enzymes that break down proteins. First into smaller fragments called peptides and eventually down to their components, amino acids. There are different types of proteolytic enzymes classified according to the sites that they catalyse the cleavage of proteins. The best known proteolytic enzymes are found in the digestive tract. [1] Proteolytic enzymes are essential regulators and modulators of inflammatory responses in the body. In inflammation responses they have several important actions, which include taking part in the production of macrophages and natural killer cells, and the ability to act on pathogenic immune complexes. In some cases they have been known to prevent the formation at inception, which is regulatory or stimulating to the immune system.
In regards to modulation of the immune system, proteolytic enzymes work in several ways: one is the ability to reduce swelling of mucous membranes by decreasing capillary permeability. Another is improved circulation as enzymes reduce blood viscosity, which in turn increases the oxygen and nutrients in the bloodstream. Additionally, proteolytic enzymes also work to break down plasma proteins which enhance their flow into the lymphatic system, promoting a speedy resolution to pain and swelling from injuries.
